For those of you like me who haven't yet read it- Susie Salmon, an average thirteen year old who has just experienced her first kiss, is brutally raped and murdered by an odd neighbor. The story focuses on what happens after her death from Susie's perspective. From her description of Heaven to the lives of her loved ones she left behind, Susie takes us on an incredibly detailed journey. A cast of wonderful characters rounds out the story, each handling their grief in their own way.
Alice Sebold is an artist- she paints an oil subject with light watercolor strokes. Despite the horrific start the book, the story is far from morbid, instead it's uplifting in a way I hadn't expected.
The movie is due to be released in the United States on December 11, 2009. An amazing cast includes Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, and Rachel Weisz. The movie looks exactly as I imagined the scenes in the book, particularly those of "heaven."
But read the book first- it'll make the movie that much better.
