I sincerely hope that doesn't happen with Daryl Gregory. His first novel (although he has written several short stories) was utterly fantastic, fast moving, exciting all the way through. Although billed as a Science Fiction novel it's not just for science fiction readers.
In the 1950's demons began suddenly jumping their way through the population. Possession is quick, sometimes painful, and then they move on to the next person. Del Pierce experienced this phenomena at five years old when possessed by the demon Hellion. Now as a twenty something he's struggling with the idea the Hellion may have returned or even worse... never left. Returning first to his family, Del is willing to do whatever it takes to get rid of the demon once and for all.
Daryl introduces an alternative reality with a skill few can manage. He's quick, concise and inter spaces Del's journey with interesting vignettes of demon possession that fit the story.
Great read- it moves quick, so try to keep up.
